Over the decades, suburban flight and new motels along the freeways drew travelers away, and many of these downtown giants slid into decline, standing for years as dark silhouettes above quieter streets. In the last decade, though, Fresno has begun turning several of them back into housing and mixed‑use spaces, with Hotel Fresno itself recently reopening after a major restoration that transformed its upper floors into affordable apartments while preserving its historic façade.
