This close-up comes from Mar de Ajó, one of the classic seaside resorts on Argentina’s Atlantic Coast, part of the long strip of beach towns in the Partido de la Costa. What began as a 19th‑century fishing outpost became an official resort in the 1930s, and today it offers wide, gently sloping beaches where waves spread thin layers of water over the sand and leave behind shells, pebbles and bits of marine life after every receding tide.
The town is known for its long fishing pier, the shipwreck remains of the German vessel Margaretha further down the coast, and family summers where generations of porteños escape the city heat for simpler days of mate, windbreaks and long walks hunting for shells like the ones in the photo. Along this stretch of the Argentine Atlantic Coast, storms and changing currents regularly strand mollusk shells and other treasures on the beach, enriching the sand with patterns and textures that make even a small patch of shoreline feel like its own miniature landscape.
